A clear road crosses a clearing obliquely and disappears towards a dark passage in the forest. On the right, an immense trunk cut by the edge of the canvas dominates the foreground; on the left, thinner trees stand out under a sky crossed by clouds. Monet gives this 1865 landscape a monumental scale and moving light, on the scale of his great Luncheon on the Grass project.
Look at the work
The pavement enters the image from the bottom left, widens in the center then narrows towards the wood. A strip of luminous grass borders it on the right. The trees in the clearing alternate thin trunks, masses of foliage and branches cut out against a blue-gray sky.
The large tree on the right acts as a spectacular foreground. Its brown and gray trunk rises out of the frame and its roots anchor in a gray area. Behind it, the road and trees bathed in light are much lighter, which increases the depth and feeling of a passage between cover and clearing.
The road is not just a represented path: its diagonal connects the viewer to the wood and distributes the great contrasts between shadow, light and sky.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The trunk on the right occupies a disproportionate place and is cut by the upper edge. Faced with this close mass, the pavement opens to the left and gives the landscape ample movement rather than peaceful symmetry.
The roadway combines beige, gray, pink and blue without continuous contour. Its differences in value follow the irregularities of the terrain and move the eye towards the dark passage at the bottom.
Ordrupgaard brings this painting closer to the great Déjeuner sur l'herbe that Monet prepared in 1865. The landscape functions fully alone, but its scale and its luminous opening also correspond to the natural setting imagined for this ambitious scene.

The visual corresponds to Pavé de Chailly in the forest of Fontainebleau, Ordrupgaard inventory 250 WH and Wildenstein number 57. The image of 1,600 × 1,184 px is preserved at its native definition in a real WebP file.
Its roots, its curvature and its exit from the frame must remain very present. Reducing or centering it would cause the painting to lose its bold framing and depth.
It does not form a regular ribbon: its edges spread, break and disappear in places in the grass. The pinks, blues and grays of its surface make the light cloudy.
Pale blue areas appear between large gray and white masses. These passages illuminate the clearing while maintaining a changing atmosphere rather than uniform full sun.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1865, this oil on canvas measures 97 × 130.5 cm. It is kept in Ordrupgaard under the 250 WH inventory and listed as Wildenstein 57.
Chailly-en-Bière and the neighboring forest attracted Monet and several young painters in 1865. They worked there in front of the motif, in a territory already made famous by the landscapers of Barbizon.
Ordrupgaard explains that the painting can be regarded as an independent work but also as a study linked to the monumental Luncheon on the Grass. Monet then wanted to respond to the innovative painting presented by Manet in 1863.
With its 97 × 130.5 cm, the work goes far beyond small outdoor study. This scale allows Monet to give the trunk, the road and the sky a physical presence adapted to his ambition of great composition.
