The Potato Peeler, F365rReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Sitting in profile on a wooden chair, a peasant woman in a white headdress holds a potato and a small knife above her knees. The face, hands and tuber emerge from an almost monochrome range of browns, black greens and grays.

Look at the work

A daily gesture concentrated in a small dark format

The figure fills almost the entire height. Its pleated headdress forms the main light area, while the vertical back of the chair stabilizes the right edge and the arms converge towards the hands.

Van Gogh does not detail the room: a few passes of brown are enough at the bottom and at the seat. All attention is on the inclined head, the knife, the potato and the compact pose of the body at work.

The F365r/JH654 Potato Peeler is a 40.6 × 31.8 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in February - March 1885. It is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 67.187.70b.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Angular drawing, thick touch and restricted palette give the figure an almost sculptural density. The light elements do not serve to embellish the scene: they allow the gesture to be read in the dark.

01

The headdress frames a head fully absorbed in work

Its cream and gray folds contrast with the brown face. The lowered gaze joins the diagonal of the forearms and leads directly towards the potato.

02

The hands form the narrative center

The knife and tuber are tiny, but their position between two illuminated hands makes the action immediately readable. The fingers are constructed by short, thick keys.

03

The chair gives a vertical frame to the installation

Its back rises behind the arm and responds to the edge of the canvas. This straight line balances the rounded back, the inclined head and the tight legs.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F365r/JH654, number 67.187.70b and dimensions of 40.6 × 31.8 cm identify this peasant study from the Metropolitan Museum.

Cycle

Study belongs to research leading to Potato Eaters

At the beginning of 1885, Van Gogh observed the inhabitants of Nuenen in their domestic gestures. These figure studies prepare the large composition painted in spring.

Palette

The dark scale is characteristic of the Nuenen period

Brown, olive green, colored black and off-white dominate. The rough material and compact design reinforce the gravity of manual work.

Reverse

A Parisian self-portrait is on the other side

Van Gogh later reused the canvas in Paris. The reverse bears the Self-portrait with the straw hat F365v, painted in 1887 and kept under the same inventory number.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the white headdress, the inclined profile, the potato and the knife, the lit hands, the vertical back of the chair and the very dark range of Nuenen.

  • The gray and cream folds of the headdress
  • The brown profile facing the hands
  • The small, clear blade held in the center
  • Fingers closed around the potato
  • The chair back that goes up along the right edge
