À propos de l’œuvre
Panier de bulbes de crocus, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · January -February 1887 · Paris
Basket of crocus bulbs, F334Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A low basket overflows with light-tipped crocus bulbs; brown, green and gray are placed in angular touches on an almost bare table, in a Parisian still life signed "Vincent".
Look at the work
A basket of bulbs treated like a landscape
The basket is slightly off-center to the left and seen from above. The tight bulbs raise their shoots in an irregular row, while the handle extends to the right.
The table and the background merge into beige grays. Brown, green and ivory lines construct the basket and its contents; the red signature at the bottom left provides the only clearly isolated accent.
The Van Gogh Museum dates this oil on canvas from January - February 1887 in Paris. It bears inventory s0179V1962 and references F334/JH1228.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The original measures 32.5 × 41.2 cm. Its small horizontal format focuses attention on the differences in texture between wicker, earth and sprouts.
Shoots in a tight rhythm
The light points emerge from the bulbs like a serrated line. Their varied directions prevent the row from becoming decorative.
A basket modeled by lines
Wicker is not drawn strand by strand. Alternating oblique bands quickly suggest the braided structure and edge thickness.
A deliberately muted palette
The beige gray of the background brings out the dark greens and ivory touches without resorting to the dazzling contrasts of later landscapes.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The official notice establishes a precise dating, dimensions and numbers which distinguish this basket from the version with hyacinth bulbs.
Crocus bulbs
The young pointed shoots and the title of the museum identify the contents of the basket, a simple motif chosen to study material and shape.
The Paris Winter of 1887
The canvas is painted between January and February, before the very luminous landscapes of Asnières created a few months later.
"Vincent" bottom left
The red signature stands out discreetly from the background and confirms the artist's preference for his first name alone.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy should render the density of the basket, the multitude of shoots and the subtle green browns while keeping the signature light.
- The ivory tips of crocuses
- Tight brown-green bulbs
- Oblique braiding of the basket
- Thin handle to the right
- The red signature "Vincent"
