A family gathered in the calm of the evening

The man leans over his basketry on the left, the woman sits near the cradle and the hanging lamp illuminates the center. Each gesture remains contained in the narrow space of the room.

The fire, lamp and window create several foci of light. Purples, blues, grays and browns unify walls, furniture and figures in a soft darkness.

Theo sends Van Gogh prints reproducing works by Millet. In Saint-Rémy, the artist "translates" this image into color and uses a calm range of mauves and violets to express domestic serenity.
