Reproduction details

Claude Monet · The Het Oosterkattegat mill in 1871 · Wildenstein 171

A mill in Zaandam W171hand painted reproduction

The Het Oosterkattegat mill dominates a small port in the Zaan. A yellow sail, several brown sails and black hulls overlap in front of its green structure, while a foreground of grass and stakes separates the viewer from the water. Monet gives this industrial landscape almost monumental stability without sacrificing wind, humidity and boat activity.

Look at the work

Mill rises above tight wearing sails

The mill tower is placed almost in the center, but its oblique wings shift the balance to the right. A red fireplace rises behind them and brings an unexpected vertical accent. Around the base, green and red buildings mingle with masts, ropes and hulls.

In the foreground, a strip of light grass is crossed by blue flowers, reeds and inclined stakes. This nearby bank creates a distance from the boats. Two small figures near the water give the scale of the mill and transform the panorama into an inhabited scene.

The mill appears fixed and heavy, but the wings, sails and grass circulate the air around it.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A very calculated central construction

The mill occupies the heart of the landscape, surrounded by sails of different heights. The composition remains balanced despite the profusion of masts.

02

Yellow as a bright focus

The light sail stands out between the browns and the greens. It captures the light of the sky and catches the eye even before the structure of the mill.

03

Three bands deep

Nearby grass, water with boats, then houses and mill clearly follow one another. The vast sky prevents this superposition from becoming compact.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the Wildenstein 171 version cataloged by Sotheby's. The public domain file measures 2,000 × 1,312 px; it is kept at its native definition, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.

Composition01

A recognizable silhouette

The green tower, the wide open wings and the red chimney make up a precise profile. Their relative position must remain stable in reproduction.

Color02

Muted tones awakened by yellow

Brown, gray greens and pale blues dominate. The yellow sail and a few red roofs concentrate the warmest passages.

Matter03

A firm touch on the boats

Hulls and stakes are described by dark accents. The sky and foreground use broader gestures, which maintain the atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 50 × 75 cm is identified under the number Wildenstein 171. Signed lower left, it is now in a private collection.

Topography01

The Het Oosterkattegat mill

Research carried out for the Monet in Holland exhibition identifies the mill, located on the outskirts of the Zuiddijk. The bell tower of the Oosterzijderkerk appears in the distance.

Function02

A mill intended for grinding pigments

Zaandam had hundreds of mills used for sawing, pumping or grinding. Het Oosterkattegat was precisely used to reduce coloring materials into pigments.

Provenance03

Sold by Durand-Ruel from 1872

The merchant acquired the painting from Monet in March 1872. François Depeaux bought it in 1894; it then passed through several large galleries and international collections.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the alignment of the tower, wings and red chimney.
  • Preserve the yellow sail as the main light without saturating it.
  • Distinguish between the hulls, the masts and the small figures at the foot of the mill.
  • Keep the strip of light grass and its blue accents in the foreground.
