Look at the work

The large millstone measures evening light and the depth of the meadow

The main grinding wheel is thrown to the right and occupies almost the entire height of the field. On the left, a smaller grinding wheel receives more light; their difference in scale builds distance.

The purple brown of the straw responds to the greens and blues of the grass. Behind, the fine trunks of the poplars cut out a vertical screen in front of the lighter hills.

W900 precedes the systematic cycle of 1890 -1891: the wheel pattern is already used to record a precise light effect rather than a simple agricultural scene.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A dark mass in the foreground

The large millstone is not centered. Its visual weight on the right balances the succession of small shapes, poplars and hills to the left.

02

An evening effect

The cold shadow of the nearby millstone and the warmer light of the background indicate a low sun coming from the left. Color shapes volumes without hard contours.

03

The canvas 4-3398

The dimensions of 64.5 × 81 cm, the inventory of the Pushkin Museum and Wildenstein 900 identify this old version among the millstones of Giverny.

Composition01

Essential scale gaps

The large nearby millstone, the small illuminated millstone and the third shape in the distance must maintain their proportions so that the meadow recedes naturally.

Color02

Purple and green shadows

The main volume contains brown, mauve, blue and green. A uniform brown would suppress evening vibrations.

Matter03

Denser material on straw

The tight touches of the millstone contrast with the horizontal passages of the grass and the vertical lines of the poplars.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Pushkin Museum preserves Meule near Giverny, oil on canvas from 1889, 64.5 × 81 cm, inventory 4-3398 and Wildenstein 900.

Location01

La Prairie south of Giverny

Monet works in a grassy area bordered by an arm of the Epte. The millstones visible here are haystacks, different from the wheat shepherds of the following cycle.

Provenance02

Former Ivan Morozov collection

Ivan Morozov acquired the painting in 1907. After the nationalization of his collection, the work was attributed to the Pushkin Museum in 1948.

Cycle03

A prelude to the Meules

W900 belongs to previous research which prepared the group of twenty-five millstones painted in series between 1890 and 1891.
