Look at the work

The morning sun cuts through a dark mass in the snow

The millstone occupies the left of the center and leaves a large snowy field on the right. Its top exceeds the line of distant trees, which reinforces its presence, while the oblique shadow connects the pattern to the foreground without any outline closing the shape.

The gray pink sky cools near the horizon. The woody background changes to turquoise blue and purple; the millstone combines brown, purple and ocher, with a thin yellow glow on its edge. In the snow, the same colors return in the form of light touches and reflections.

W1280 contrasts the stability of the grinding wheel with an already moving morning light, visible in the golden edge and the lengthening of the shadow.

The 65.4 × 92.4 cm format, the number 1970.253 and the unique grinding wheel identify W1280. The Getty's version titled almost the same way has a more panoramic format and a different composition.

Snow as a reflective surface

Monet does not treat the ground pure white. Roses, yellows, blues and lilacs translate sky light and cast shadow, giving the snow a colorful depth.

A series conducted from motif to workshop

Monet begins the canvases in front of the straddles then takes them back to the workshop to harmonize the colors. The final coherence therefore comes from the observation of a precise effect as much as from a long painting job.

Denser touches on the pattern

The grinding wheel receives a tight, directional material; the snow is more open and horizontal; the bottom blends into the atmosphere. This texture hierarchy organizes depth.

Initial purchase01

Durand-Ruel, May 1891

Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting directly from Monet on May 9, 1891, when the gallery presented fifteen works from the series together.

Collection02

The Lamb family in Boston

Durand-Ruel sells the work to Mr. and Mrs. Horatio A. Lamb from June 1891. She remained in the family until the Lamb girls donated to the museum in 1970.

The signature and date are placed at the bottom left. They precisely link this version to the winter group completed for the 1891 exhibition.
