Two gerbiers emerge from a snow-covered field under a pink and blue sky. Monet contrasts their compact structure with an atmosphere almost dissolved by the cold. This oil on canvas measuring 64.8 × 100.3 cm, signed Claude Monet 91, is kept at the J. Paul Getty Museum under number 95.PA.63 and listed Wildenstein 1276.
Look at the work
The large millstone on the right dominates the landscape, while a second, smaller one moves back to the left. Their difference in scale and the blue shadow placed on the snow build the space. On the horizon, a few houses become readable only from a distance, as if the cold air dissolved their contours.
The pale pink sky extends into the reflections of the snow. Blue shadows reappear on the roofs, in the ground and on the gerbiers, which unifies the canvas without confusing the materials. Thick, broken touches give the millstones a geometric structure that the atmosphere never manages to dissolve.
W1276 holds two opposites together: snow diffuses light, but gerbiers remain heavy and clearly present architectures.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The large gerbier advances towards the right edge and the small one retreats to the left. Maintaining precisely this difference in size is essential: it gives the field its depth even before the houses on the horizon intervene.
The Getty highlights the echoes between the roses of the sky, their reflections on the ground and the blues of the shadows. Winter light depends on this circulation, not on a pure white placed uniformly.
The raised and fragmented keys capture the changing nuances, but they follow the conical volume of the shepherds. The material must therefore vibrate without erasing their construction.

Only one image is used: the high definition file of the Getty Open Content program, converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 1,938 px from an original of 10,924 × 7,057 px, without artificial enlargement.
The large shape is wider, warmer and more detailed; the small one remains cold and simplified by distance. Their hierarchy must remain visible even in a reduced format.
Cream, pink, blue, lilac and a few browns cross the field. Uniform white would give a flat surface and remove morning light changes.
Brushstrokes follow the straw, stretch into the shadows and become more melted into the sky. These distinct directions separate materials without the need for hard contours.
Documented benchmarks
The Getty documents an oil on canvas from 1891, 64.8 × 100.3 cm, signed Claude Monet 91 lower left, inventory 95.PA.63; the catalog raisonné lists it under number 1276.
From the fall of 1890, Monet obtained that the gerbiers near his house remained in the field. He painted them at least thirty times under different lights, seasons and weather conditions.
Monet begins in front of the pattern to capture the luminous effect, then takes up the paintings in the workshop. These adjustments construct the colorful harmonies that connect sky, snow, shadows and straw.
The Los Angeles Museum acquired the work in 1995. Its object number, dimensions and signature distinguish it from other snow effects in the series.
