Les Meules, white jelly effect W1215hand painted reproduction

Two millstones stand in a field covered in white frost, their ochres and roses warming a landscape dominated by blues, mauves and cold greens. Painted in 1889, this 65 × 92 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington and corresponds to Wildenstein 1215.

Look at the work

The jelly transforms the field into a laboratory of cold and warm colors

The large wheel on the left occupies almost the entire useful height, while a second, smaller one moves back to the right. Their shift creates a simple depth; the strip of trees and hills close the space without interrupting the morning light.

White, blue, green and purple describe frost on the ground. On the millstones, orange, pink, red and brown appear in short touches, mixed with purple shadows which connect the volumes to the cold atmosphere.

Frost does not erase colors: it redistributes them, cooling the field while making the straw appear warmer and denser.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two similar but non-repetitive volumes

The difference in scale and position between the grinding wheels is enough to produce depth. The large mass stabilizes the left; the small one extends the gaze towards the distance.

02

Colorful shadows rather than black

Blues, purples and greens shape the shaded side of the millstones and the frozen ground. This construction retains light even in the darkest passages.

03

A milestone before the series of 1890 -1891

W1215 belongs to Monet's first research on millstones in Giverny. The pattern will be taken up methodically according to the seasons, times and atmospheric conditions.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1215 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,119 px, reduced from the public source by 5,947 × 4,200 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the relationship between the two grinding wheels

The small grinding wheel should not be enlarged or brought together. Its apparent distance gives the field its extent and distinguishes this version.

Color02

Keep white as a mixed color

Frost contains blue, pink, green and mauve. A pure, uniform white would eliminate the temperature variations that keep the soil alive.

Matter03

Keep the material thick in the lights

Visible touches and small impasto hang the clarity on the straw. A surface that is too smooth would reduce the physical presence of the millstones.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hill-Stead Museum preserves Grainstacks, White Frost Effect, oil on canvas from 1889, 65 × 92 cm and listed Wildenstein 1215.

Acquisition01

Purchased by Alfred Pope in 1889

Alfred Pope acquired the work from Boussod, Valadon et Cie in Paris, at the same time as a view of Monet's Cap d'Antibes. It was among his first impressionist purchases.

Observation02

A cold morning light in Giverny

The museum highlights the role of greens, purples, soft oranges and pinks, as well as the white touches which reflect the refraction of light on frost.

Together03

Presented with another Monet Grindstone

At Hill-Stead, W1215 can be compared to Grainstacks, in Bright Sunlight. The confrontation shows how the same pattern changes depending on the season and time.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1215 version
  • The two wheels of different sizes
  • Blue, green and purple frost
  • The orange and pink accents of the straw
