A young woman in a white dress sits on a green bench, her hands crossed and her body slightly turned. Her parasol rests against the seat, while the fabric of her skirt extends to the right in a large pink, blue and cream shape. Monet does not seek the worldly precision of a portrait: he confronts the figure with the spotted light of a dense garden.
Look at the work
The figure occupies almost the entire height of the canvas. Her blue-green hat, decorated with a red accent, stands out against the dark foliage; the pink face and hands remain quickly indicated. The crossed posture, slightly restrained, contrasts with the freedom of the brushstrokes around her.
The closed parasol leans diagonally against the bench and descends towards the lower edge. On the right, the skirt blossoms into a large triangle where white, pink, mauve and blue mingle. The bench and the plants are painted in superimposed greens, crossed in bright yellow as if by bursts of sunlight.
The dress is never simply white: it becomes a surface where the sky, leaves, flowers and shadow deposit their colors.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The model sits stably, but the tight framing, the posed umbrella and the skirt cut by the edge give the impression of a surprised moment. Monet thus maintains the presence of a portrait while favoring an immediate sensation.
The color combines warm creams in the light, blues and mauves in the shade, then small pink touches. These variations rotate the volume without resorting to a traditional brown or gray pattern.
The garden is reduced to green, yellow and black bands and vertical touches. Its density highlights the face and the dress, but a few lines of the bench are enough to maintain concrete depth.

Blue green, white, black and a little touch of red come together above the face. This area should remain lively but small so as not to distract from the general movement of the dress.
Its pale shape passes in front of the bench and breaks the verticals of the garden. It should remain clearly closed, with a suggested rather than detailed handle and folds.
The right edge of the fabric loses its sharpness in places in front of the bench and the floor. Preserving these transitions prevents the silhouette from appearing cut out and restores the air circulating around the model.
Documented benchmarks
Dated around 1874, this oil on canvas measures 73.7 × 55.9 cm. It bears inventories N04184 at the Tate and NG4184 at the National Gallery, as well as Wildenstein number 343.
The model has long been confused with Camille, the painter's wife. Information collected from the Monet family in the 20th century, however, indicates that it is another young woman, whose identity is not established.
The scene is generally located in the garden of the larger house that Monet rented in Argenteuil in 1874. Manet and Renoir came that year to work with the family, making this garden a real shared outdoor painting laboratory.
The work was donated to the Tate by the Art Fund in 1926. It is now shown at the National Gallery as part of a long-term loan, under number NG4184.
