The Church of Vétheuil W473hand painted reproduction

The Notre-Dame de Vétheuil church appears behind a group of tight houses and irregular walls. Its sculpted facade and its tower topped with a blue roof dominate the composition, but Monet places them in the ordinary life of the town: paths, gardens, open windows and small figures lead to the monument.

Look at the work

The village forms a threshold in front of the church

The western facade of the church stands slightly to the left of the center. Its pinnacles, large arch and small towers are translated by a mosaic of ocher, gray, green and pink rather than a meticulous architectural design. To the right, the massive tower and its dark blue roof give the monument its highest point.

A white house occupies the center of the foreground and hides part of the church. Its blue shutters, its light roof and its red base are surrounded by walls, slopes and vegetation. A few tiny inhabitants line the path; their presence transforms the monumental view into an inhabited scene.

Monet does not clear the monument: he makes it emerge through the tangle of houses and paths.
