L'Arlésienne, Madame Ginoux with a parasol and gloves, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Early November 1888 · Arles, France

The Arlesienne with parasol and glovesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Marie Ginoux is represented in front of a lemon background, her face resting on her hand. On the green table, Van Gogh places a closed parasol and a pair of gloves: these objects distinguish the first version kept at the Musée d'Orsay.

Look at the work

An Arlesian painted with assumed speed

The figure is isolated in front of a vast pale yellow background. His black and Prussian blue clothing forms a compact mass, lit by the light breastplate. The hand against the cheek and the lowered gaze give the pose a meditative gravity.

Van Gogh writes that he painted this figure in an hour. The Musée d'Orsay highlights the contrast between the visible speed of the touch and the immobility of the model. The dark parasol and green gloves cross the table in the foreground, in place of the books present in the Met version.

The painting transforms a woman known to the artist into a Provençal icon, without erasing the singularity of her face.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This version must remain distinct from the Met portrait: the background is paler and the foreground contains an umbrella and gloves, not books.

01

A lemon background

Light yellow surrounds the silhouette without architectural depth. Its variations in material preserve the speed of the work and make the contours vibrate.

02

Black and Prussian blue

The garment is not a uniform black mass. Deep blues, grays and lighter touches give shape to the sleeves and bust.

03

Parasol and gloves

These accessories form a dark diagonal on the green table. They allow us to immediately identify the first version from November 1888.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Musée d'Orsay notice dates the work to the beginning of November 1888 and identifies it by the RF 1952 inventory 6.

Model

The owner of Café de la Gare

Marie Ginoux regularly receives Van Gogh and Gauguin. She also took care of Van Gogh during his hospitalization in December 1888.

Execution

A figure painted in an hour

Van Gogh himself insists on the speed of the portrait, perceptible in the free brushstrokes of the background and the garment.

Collection

Inventory RF 1952 6

The painting, given to the State in 1952, is today kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the speed of the touch while keeping the pose, hands, parasol and gloves perfectly recognizable.

  • Marie Ginoux's hand position and meditative expression
  • The shades of the garment between black, Prussian blue and gray
  • The light embroidered bib and regional hairstyle
  • The parasol and gloves on the table, specific to this version

In your interior

A Provençal icon with immediate presence

The canvas strongly enlivens a library, a living room or an office. The lemon background brings light, while the blue-black of the garment and the green of the table anchor it in a decor with warm woods or sober walls.
