Look at the work

Camille appears at the top of the hill, as if in a surprised moment

Monet takes a very low point of view. Camille stands out life-size against the sky, while their son Jean appears further away, half hidden by the grassy ridge. This shift in depth gives the scene the appearance of a spontaneous encounter.

The pose is not immobile, however. The veil crosses the face, the skirt lifts to the left and the parasol seems to resist the breeze. The clouds are painted in the same rapid movement, directly connecting the figure to the landscape.

Perhaps the real subject of the painting is the wind: invisible, it becomes readable in every fabric, every grass and every cloud.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand the strength of this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A daring low angle

The line of the hill descends behind Camille and clears her silhouette. The parasol brushes against the upper edge, reinforcing the feeling of proximity.

02

The face behind the veil

Monet renounces academic detail. A few flesh tones, gray and blue are enough; the white veil crosses the lines and immediately reflects the movement of the air.

03

Light distributed everywhere

The whites of the dress reflect the clouds, the yellows of the meadow pass over the sleeve, and the green of the parasol responds to the grass. Figure and landscape share the same palette.

Read this specific version

The single WebP image on the sheet corresponds to the documented version of the work and retains its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Camille, the veil and the parasol

The dark green of the parasol frames the face and contrasts with the sky. The white touches of the veil prevent the portrait from freezing.

Color02

John on the prairie

The child's small silhouette gives depth. In the foreground, touches of yellow, purple and blue make the grass vibrate without describing each flower.

Loyalty03

Benchmarks to preserve

Camille's face perceptible behind the veil. The lateral movement of the dress and the transparency of the whites. The depth between Camille, Jean and the slope. The sky builds in quick touches without uniform background effect.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The facts below concern this specific version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Session01

Painted in one go

The National Gallery of Art says Monet completed the painting during a single outdoor session, working quickly in front of the motif.

Identities02

Camille and Jean Monet

The woman is Camille Doncieux, wife of the painter; their son Jean, aged about eight, stands back on the left.

Exposure03

The Promenade, 1876

The work was presented at the second impressionist exhibition of 1876 under the title La Promenade, number 161.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on very precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Camille's face perceptible behind the veil
  • The lateral movement of the dress and the transparency of the whites
  • The depth between Camille, Jean and the slope
  • The sky builds in quick touches without uniform background effect

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The vertical format and bright sky give momentum to an entrance, bedroom or living room. A light frame, matte gold or natural wood goes well with blues and greens.
