The Seine describes a wide curve in front of a low bank covered with vegetation. In the distance, a line of poplars and blue-green hills stretches under an immense sky, loaded with white, gray and lavender clouds whose variations are reflected in the water. Painted in 1880, this very elongated oil on canvas measures 60.3 × 100.3 cm. It belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 30.95.271 and corresponds to Wildenstein 599.

Look at the work

The sky, the bank and the river unfold in long bands, but none remains still

The dark bank enters from the lower left corner then thins towards the center. Its sinuous contour leads to the curve of the Seine and avoids a simple horizontal division. On the other bank, the trees form a series of short verticals which give the scale of the panorama.

The sky takes up almost half the size. Its clouds are built by oblique and superimposed touches, lighter to the left and bluer upwards. In the river, gestures become horizontal and more spaced out; the same colors appear there, cooled and mixed with the greens of the bank.

The panorama seems very simple, yet Monet differentiates each area by the direction of the key: rising in the trees, oblique in the clouds and horizontal in the water.
