A view taken upstream, where pink light envelops the hill and spreads over the Seine

The Kreeger Museum precisely identifies the direction of gaze: upstream, with the hill of Port-Villez-Jeufosse in the background. The group of trees on the left forms a very close vertical mass, while the opposite bank is reduced to a long low strip.

Pink is not just for the sky. It crosses the hill, the bank and the water, mixed with dark greens, mauves and grays. This repetition unites the planes, but the darker reflection of the trees maintains a clear depth in the foreground.

W1371 does not only represent a pink sky: the color becomes a continuous atmosphere that connects the hill, the banks and the river.

Jean-Pierre Hoschedé, Monet's son-in-law, reports that this work was painted from a boat. This low position explains the importance of the water surface and the close framing of the clump of trees.

The trees on the left are dense, almost tactile, while the hill dissolves in the light. The copy must maintain this contrast of sharpness without hardening the distant bank.

Pink as light, not as flat

Grays, blues and yellows constantly modulate the pink passages. Fidelity depends on these variations: a uniform shade would remove mist and depth from the landscape.
