Two rabbits in arid terrain
A brown rabbit is in the center left, seen in profile, while a second, lighter one stands a little higher to the right. Their erect ears are enough to detach them from the field.
A gnarled tree enters from the upper left edge and dark bushes close the background. Yellow and pink gullies describe an irregular slope rather than a continuous perspective.
The Van Gogh Museum dates F739 from December 1889 in Saint-Rémy. With its modest dimensions and unusual animal motif, this canvas stands out from the large landscapes of wheat, cypresses and olive trees painted the same year.
