A clear fence borders an intense green meadow at the bottom of the Val de Falaise. Behind it, the houses and pruned trees stand out in front of a hillside where ochres, pinks and cold blues mingle under a winter sky. This oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 80.5 cm, signed "Claude Monet 85", belongs to the Gabriele and Werner Merzbacher collection and is on permanent loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich under the number MB 0007. It corresponds to Wildenstein 975.

A snow-free winter valley, organized by the fence, trunks and oblique movement of the hillside

The barrier starts from the lower right edge, runs along the green of the meadow then disappears before the houses. Its diagonal gives an entrance to the view and contrasts a light geometry with the gnarled trunks erected in the center. The buildings remain fragmentary: a few white sections, gray roofs and blue shadows are enough to locate the habitat in the hollow of the slope.

The hillside fills almost the entire upper right. Monet superimposes straw yellow, orange, mauve and blue without smoothing the passages. On the left, the cold sky descends to the fine trees; on the right, the low light warms the relief. The green foreground thus maintains a bright freshness facing warmer lands.

The season is told not by a white coat, but by leafless trees, low light and the unexpected accord of a still green meadow with scorched lands.

Their dark silhouette stands out against the light hillside. They are neither aligned nor of the same height: their intervals reveal walls, roofs and variations in terrain.

Green and orange carry light

The saturated meadow responds to the ochres of the hillside, while blues connect the sky, shadows and distant trees. This circulation of complements maintains unity despite a very contrasting palette.

It must remain visible without becoming a rigid line. Its inclination and the progressive spacing of the slats regulate the depth from the foreground to the houses.

Preserve the green of the meadow

This green is not a modern correction: it belongs to the colored balance of W975. It must remain bright while receiving blue and brown shadows near trees.

Matter03

Make the touch discontinuous on the hillside

Colors do not describe every botanical detail. The relief appears in small superimposed touches, warmer on the lit slopes and colder in the hollows.
