À propos de l’œuvre
Paysage d'automne au crépuscule, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · October -November 1885 · Nuenen
Autumn landscape at dusk, F121Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under a vault of red trees, a silhouette advances on a path already covered by shadow. A narrow yellow band illuminates the horizon between the trunks; this last remnant of daylight is enough to give depth and tension to the entire landscape.
Look at the work
A band of distant light crosses the dark undergrowth
The vertical trunks form an irregular screen across the entire width. On the left, they tighten at the side of the path; in the center and right, their branches merge into a red-brown mass which retains the evening light.
The dark walker, slightly off-center, marks the entrance into the landscape. The path widens in the foreground then narrows behind it, while a fence and a few horizontal lines indicate the fields beyond the trees.
Autumn landscape at dusk F121/JH956 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 51 × 93 cm, painted in Nuenen in October - November 1885. It is kept at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht under number 13968.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh organizes the large horizontal format around two opposing forces: the dark trunks which block the view and the light strip which suddenly opens the space in the distance.
The trees make up a very dense vertical rhythm
Each trunk varies in width, inclination and value. Their repetition transforms wood into architecture while leaving a few intervals towards the horizon.
The yellow of the sunset concentrates the depth
The lightest area is also the thinnest. Placed behind the walker and fences, it moves fields back without requiring a widely visible sky.
Reds and browns describe the time as much as the season
Autumn foliage absorbs light and becomes a warm sheet. Acidic greens remain high up and prevent the whole from reducing to a monochrome range.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F121/JH956, number 13968 and the panoramic format of 51 × 93 cm identify the painting of the Centraal Museum among the autumn landscapes of Nuenen.
The subject is based on a very brief luminous moment
The foreground is already dark, but the horizon remains yellow. This opposition makes the transition from day to evening visible without directly showing the sun.
The canvas is now mounted on a panel
The original technique remains oil on canvas, then fixed on a rigid support. The ordered reproduction is carried out manually in oil on a new canvas.
The small figure reveals the scale of the wood
Without the silhouette on the path, the trees could appear abstract. Its height measures the trunks and transforms the clearing into a walkable space.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the long format, the silhouette of the walker, the pinkish-brown path, the yellow band of the horizon and the fine red, green and purple variations of the foliage.
- The dark walker placed to the left of the center
- The yellow stripe that shines behind the trunks
- The narrowing of the path to the background
- Vertical trunks with irregular spacing
- The green touches that persist at the top of the foliage
