Paysage enneigé avec Arles en arrière-plan, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February 1888 · Arles

Snowy landscape with Arles in the background, F391Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Beyond a snow-covered field, the silhouette of Arles stretches under a very pale blue sky. A dislocated fence, dry reeds and a few bare branches occupy the foreground with almost graphic vigor.

Look at the work

The distant city appears behind a very constructed first winter plan

The horizon is set high and remains almost perfectly horizontal: towers, chimneys and houses of Arles form a blue and gray frieze. The vast white field that precedes them gives the city an unusual distance.

At the bottom, the branches rise from the left corner, while the fence boards and yellow grass cut the snow diagonally. A small green bush on the right provides the only plant mass still dense.

Snowy landscape with Arles in the background is a 50 × 60 cm oil on canvas painted in February 1888. Referenced F391/JH1358, the work belongs to a private collection in London.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh discovered Arles on February 20, 1888 under exceptional snow. Cold light simplifies the shots, but the painter animates each area with distinct touches of color rather than uniform white.

01

The Arles line gives a measure to the large white field

Tiny monuments transform the snowy expanse into real distance. Their vertical rhythm responds discreetly to the branches and reeds in the foreground.

02

The disorder of the fence keeps the eye close to the viewer

Piles, boards and vegetation intersect without following the regular perspective of the field. This tactile density contrasts with the almost empty calm of the distance.

03

The snow remains crossed by yellow, blue and pink

The colorful touches suggest earth, grasses and atmospheric reflections. They prevent the clear surface from becoming flat and gradually lead towards the horizon.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F391/JH1358, the format of 50 × 60 cm and the conservation in a private collection distinguish this urban view from the F290 Snow Landscape of the Guggenheim.

Arrival

Arles welcomes Van Gogh under sixty centimeters of snow

In his letter of February 21, 1888, written the day after his arrival, the painter described an abundant fall which still covers the entire region.

Japan

The white countryside reminds him of Japanese prints

Van Gogh compares the clear peaks and snow-bright skies to the Japanese winter landscapes he studied and collected in Paris.

Signature

The name "Vincent" is hidden in the grass in the foreground

The red signature is placed at an angle in the middle of the vegetation, integrated into the direction of the stems rather than aligned with the edge of the canvas.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the very fine frieze of Arles, the nuanced white field, the irregular brown fence, the yellow reeds, the bare branches and the small green bush in the foreground.

  • The blue silhouette of Arles on the horizon
  • Snow punctuated with touches of pink, yellow and blue
  • The bare branches that rise to the left
  • The wooden fence with oblique framing
  • The red signature hidden in the herbs

A bright winter landscape, calm in the distance and nervous in the foreground

Ivory white, mist blue, straw yellow, wood brown and muted green create a clear atmosphere for a living room, an office or an interior with natural materials.
