Paysage avec des lapins, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · December 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Landscape with rabbits, F739Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two rabbits stand in clear ground crossed by gullies and bushes; rare in Van Gogh, these animals are almost absorbed by the same tawny, gray and green touches as the Provençal soil.
Look at the work
Two rabbits in arid terrain
A brown rabbit is in the center left, seen in profile, while a second, lighter one stands a little higher to the right. Their erect ears are enough to detach them from the field.
A gnarled tree enters from the upper left edge and dark bushes close the background. Yellow and pink gullies describe an irregular slope rather than a continuous perspective.
The Van Gogh Museum dates F739 from December 1889 in Saint-Rémy. With its modest dimensions and unusual animal motif, this canvas stands out from the large landscapes of wheat, cypresses and olive trees painted the same year.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Inventory s0099V1962, format of 32.7 × 40.6 cm and references F739/JH1876 exactly identify the work.
Almost camouflaged animals
The furs take up the ochres, grays and purples of the terrain. Rabbits emerge more through their contours and ears than through an isolated color.
A moving ground
The keys follow the hollows and bumps, drawing an undulating material that occupies almost the entire painting.
A tree cut by the frame
The dark branch enters without a visible trunk and closes the upper corner. This partial framing reinforces the impression of direct observation.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Van Gogh Museum notice provides unambiguous dating, dimensions and catalog numbers.
F739 and JH1876
These references differentiate this small landscape from other undergrowth and gullies studies carried out in Saint-Rémy.
A rare animal subject
Van Gogh mainly paints figures, still lifes and landscapes; the central presence of two rabbits makes this canvas atypical.
