The pink massif becomes the pivot of a sunny clearing
A large dark foliage enters from the upper left corner and frames the light facade. In the center, the flowering bush forms a round mass made of greens, pinks and whites. Its position hides part of the path and slows down the depth.
The lawn opens to the right in green and yellow bands, covered with blue shadows. Tall trees close the right edge, while a few red touches appear near the horizon. The sky remains visible in a narrow opening above the massif.
The buildings set the scene in Paris, but the painting belongs first and foremost to the herbs, flowers and moving shadows of the clearing.

It serves as an urban landmark and scale, but the leaves cover it widely. Too many architectural details would look away from the garden.
The sun is circulating on the lawn
The yellow areas do not form a uniform band. They alternate with cold greens and oblique shadows that suggest off-camera foliage.

The Metropolitan Museum says Monet painted three views of Monceau Park that spring. He is interested here in large expanses of grass and flowering trees.
Presented in 1877
This version appears in the third impressionist exhibition. The park, surrounded by mansions on Boulevard de Courcelles, provides a subject where developed nature and modern Paris come together.
The legacy of Loula D. Lasker
The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art by the bequest of Loula D. Lasker. It bears inventory 59.206 and is attached to the department of European paintings.
