À propos de l’œuvre
Paysage avec gerbes de blé et lune montante, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Landscape with sheaves and rising moon, F735Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Round sheaves occupy the enclosed field while a large yellow moon rises above the Alpilles. Van Gogh unites the harvest and the night with a multitude of small curved touches, the current color of which also keeps track of the aging of the pigments.
Look at the work
Moon rises above a field of sheaves
In the foreground, the sheaves are distributed like large ocher and yellow discs among the furrows. The asylum wall forms a horizontal band, interrupted by a few trees and small buildings.
The blue ridges of the Alpilles clearly separate the earth from the sky. Above, the pale yellow moon dominates a network of light, purple and blue-gray touches which envelop the star in a continuous vibration.
The daily motif of the harvest becomes a cosmic scene: the sheaves respond to the lunar disk and the curves of the ground extend those of the sky.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Kroeller-Müller Museum keeps this painting under the inventory KM 107.656. It measures 72 × 91.3 cm and bears the references F735/JH1761.
Two families of circular shapes
The rounded sheaves repeat on a small scale the moon placed in the sky. This formal reminder immediately links agricultural work to the nocturnal cycle.
A depth constructed in bands
Field, low wall, trees, mountains then sky overlap in horizontal levels. However, the curved keys cross these divisions and prevent the composition from becoming static.
A color transformed over time
The museum reports that very light lines today were originally more purple. Their discoloration modified the nighttime effect, essential information for understanding the current palette.

Precisely identify the original work
Landscape with Sheaves and Rising Moon F735/JH1761 was painted in July 1889. It bears the KM 107.656 inventory at the Kroeller-Müller Museum.
A largely elaborate landscape inside
Van Gogh knew the field and the Alpilles visible from Saint-Paul, but this composition was largely developed in the studio rather than painted entirely in front of the motif.
A composition that left the painter dissatisfied
In his correspondence, Van Gogh considers the result too exaggerated and too sought after. This reservation shows how much he demanded a felt line, even in his most imaginative landscapes.
A work exhibited in Otterlo
The painting belongs to the Kroeller-Müller Museum and is numbered KM 107.656. It is part of one of the most important Van Gogh ensembles in the world.
