À propos de l’œuvre
Paysage d'Auvers sous la pluie, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Rain in AuversReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Rain curtains cross the fields, trees and roofs of Auvers diagonally. Van Gogh superimposes the movement of time on a panoramic landscape made of yellow, green and blue bands, without erasing the structure of the village.
Look at the work
The oblique rain crosses the entire panorama
In the foreground, two plots respond to each other: on the left, the land and wheat are worked in ocher curves; on the right, the tall pale green grass rises in vertical lines. Between them, a small path leads to a tight line of trees and houses.
The yellow hill occupies the upper third before a milky blue sky. Long purple-blue hatching falls from left to right and crosses the sky, fields and village indiscriminately. Their regularity gives the sensation of a continuous downpour.
Rain is not added to the landscape: its diagonals become the framework that connects the loved one, the village and the hill.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work NMW A 2463 can be recognized by its double square format, its yellow hill, its blue-green village and the network of long diagonals of rain.
A panorama in strips
The near field, the curtain of trees, the village, the hill and the sky form five horizontal zones. This stable construction makes the rain passing through them all the more sensitive.
Hiroshige's lesson
Museum Wales compares the oblique hatching of Hiroshige's The Bridge in the Rain print, which Van Gogh copied in Paris in 1887.
Two directions in the foreground
The curves of the ocher field on the left oppose the almost vertical stems of the light plot on the right. The diagonal of the downpour unifies these different rhythms.

Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must replace each strip of the panorama before tracing the downpour, so that the long diagonals remain visible without hiding houses, trees and crops.
- The constant direction of the long blue-purple streaks of the rain
- The separation between the ocher field and tall pale green grass
- The line of blue-green roofs and poplars in the center
- The yellow of the hill maintained under the milky sky
