À propos de l’œuvre
Paysage au coucher du soleil, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · April 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Landscape at dusk, F191Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
The orange sun descends behind a hedge and a line of poplars. In the foreground, a ditch reflects its light between two dark banks, transforming this landscape of Nuenen into a concentrated study of twilight.
Look at the work
A reflection leads to the setting sun
The ditch starts from the lower edge and narrows towards the horizon. Its surface receives several yellow-orange touches; the almost black embankments frame this luminous ribbon.
Poplars are reduced to long, fine silhouettes. On the right, a few dark buildings and figures close the horizon, while the sky changes from gray green to orange around the sun.
Landscape at Dusk F191/JH762 is an oil on canvas mounted on 35 × 43 cm cardboard painted in Nuenen in April 1885. It is kept at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza under number 788 (1966.8).
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This work is distinct from Landscape at Sunset F79/JH763, where a cart appears. Here, the reflecting ditch, poplars and solar disk identify F191/JH762.
The ditch creates a luminous axis
Its diagonal leads from the foreground to the sun. The light touches fragment on the water and give depth to an otherwise very dark earth.
Poplars stretch the sky
Their extreme finesse opposes the verticals to the movement of the ditch. Some trunks get lost in the green of the sky, others remain almost black.
Color holds back the night
Bottle greens, browns and blacks occupy the bottom two-thirds. Orange only covers a small area, but its contrast is enough to brighten the entire scene.
