Paysage avec dune, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · The Hague, Netherlands
Landscape with dune, F2aReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A yellow dune occupies almost the entire surface, crossed by brown patches, tufts of grass and oblique furrows. This study painted in The Hague shows Van Gogh struggling with the material of sand long before the vibrant colors of Arles.
Look at the work
A mass of sand under a very pale sky
The dune rises from the foreground to a low ridge which closes the horizon. Dark shapes, sometimes rocky, sometimes vegetal, interrupt the yellow and guide the gaze towards the summit.
The sky occupies only a narrow band. Its bluish grays and whites cool the heat of the ocher, while the scratches and short touches give the terrain an almost tactile texture.
Landscape with dune F2a/JH176 is a 36 × 58.5 cm oil on panel painted in The Hague in August 1882. The work belongs to a private collection located in Amsterdam.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The composition rests neither on a monument nor on a figure: the dune itself becomes the subject. Van Gogh organizes this surface by contrasts of values, directions of touch and variations of ocher.
The dune fills the field
The very high horizon line removes almost any classical depth. The viewer finds himself facing a slope that appears close, steep and materially present.
Browns structure yellow
Plates of dark earth and vegetation are distributed diagonally. They avoid uniformity and indicate relief accidents without rigid drawing.
The touch follows the field
Short lines, scrapings and impasto change direction according to the hollows of the dune. This writing gives the sand an energy that the restricted palette does not allow to wait.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The singular title, dimensions and image make it possible to distinguish F2a/JH176 from Landscape with Dunes F15a/JH393, a different painting created in 1883.
F2a and JH176
The two catalog numbers designate this yellow dune from 1882. They are essential because Van Gogh painted several dune landscapes around The Hague.
The beginnings of oil painting
In 1882, Van Gogh further developed his oil practice. He works outside around Scheveningen and The Hague on rigid supports that are easy to transport.
The relief rather than the sea
No waves or boats are visible. The painting observes the dune itself, its sand, its grasses and its changes in level.
Your reproduction
