A meadow strewn with poppies descends towards an almost hidden path, lined with poplars and shrubs. In the distance, the hills of the Seine valley open under a vast blue sky, and the white bell tower of Vétheuil appears behind the row of trees. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81 lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 73 × 59.7 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-10 and corresponds to Wildenstein 679.

A meadow path leads discreetly towards Vétheuil

The foreground is a slope of tall yellow, green and red grass. A path starts from the lower right then sinks between the bushes. The large central poplar dominates the composition and connects the ground to the sky.

The intense blue of the sky covers more than half the size. The foliage uses emerald green, blue, yellow and white; poppies form scattered red accents. In the distance, pink and ocher lands frame the light bell tower.

Human presence only appears through the path and the bell tower: Monet lets the meadow and trees take the lead, as if the village were discovered through their growth.

The large poplar as a vertical axis

Its trunk and slightly inclined crown stabilize the format while maintaining natural movement. Smaller trees repeat this momentum at different distances.

A trail almost absorbed in grass

The path is not a clearly drawn comic strip. A few dark and light passages are enough to guide the eye towards the row of trees and the village.

The bell tower as a distant landmark

The Museum Barberini emphasizes that human presence is only suggested. The small clear arrow locates Vétheuil without interrupting the continuity of the landscape.

Keep the bell tower white between the foliage

This very small detail identifies the Vétheuil valley. It must remain perceptible but secondary to the trees.

The meadows of Saint-Martin Island facing Vétheuil

After settling in the village, Monet made the fields and hillsides of the valley his main subjects. Roads and buildings often appear only as indirect traces of human presence.

Exposure02

Presented at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition

The painting probably appeared in March 1882 under number 90 and the title Summer Landscape, Île Saint-Martin. It is thus shown shortly after its execution.

Provenance03

Purchased directly from Monet by Durand-Ruel

Paul Durand-Ruel acquired the work from the artist on October 31, 1881. After stints between Paris, New York and several American collections, she joined the Hasso Plattner collection in 2018.
