Paysage à Saint-Rémy, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Early October 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Landscape in Saint-Rémy with farmerReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A farmer carrying a sheaf crosses a plowed field, facing the low houses and the walls of the Alpilles. Van Gogh brings together in the same view the work of the land, the traces of habitation and the mountain animated by color.
Look at the work
A tiny farmer in front of the Alpilles
The blue figure advances in the lower half, in the middle of gray, purple and ocher furrows. A low wall and several houses separate this first field from a second cultivated strip.
The mountains occupy almost the entire background and are shaped by long touches of green, blue, lilac and pink. A small white cloud and a few pieces of sky remain visible in the upper left corner.
The small scale of the peasant does not erase it: its blue color and its isolated position connect the movements of the field to the large diagonals of the mountain.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This canvas, Newfields inventory 44.74, measures 76.2 × 95.3 cm. It is cataloged F641/JH1795.
The figure carries the rhythm of the foreground
The peasant is inclined like the furrows that surround him. His light wreath and blue clothing make him readable without transforming him into a monumental character.
The walls cut out the depth
Two horizontal lines separate the field, houses and slopes. They briefly slow down the gaze before climbing the Alpilles.
The mountain becomes an active surface
The ridges are not painted like a foggy distance. Their thick touches, color changes and edges give the relief as much presence as the terrain.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Landscape in Saint-Rémy with peasant was painted at the beginning of October 1889. The work bears inventory 44.74 and references F641/JH1795.
One of four enclosed fall fields
Newfields links this painting to four views of the walled field taken in the fall of 1889, each showing a different state of agricultural work.
Thought as a counterpart to the Reaper
Van Gogh associated this plowed field with an earlier composition dominated by a harvester and a yellow sun. Here, purples and grays shift the emphasis to upturned earth.
Gift of Caroline Marmon Fesler
The painting was donated to the museum in 1944 by Mrs. James W. Fesler, in memory of Daniel W. and Elizabeth C. Marmon. It bears inventory 44.74.
