Look at the work

A winding road under the last light of day

The path starts from the bottom center then goes around a group of trees before disappearing. On the left, a round tree stands in front of the fields; on the right, dark branches enter from the upper edge and partially close the sky.

The plots alternate green, yellow and brown, with rows of touches following the earth. A thin strip of blue houses occupies the horizon. The greenish-yellow sky is filled with rapid lines which give the evening a still active light.

The very large width-to-height ratio transforms a simple country lane into a panoramic twilight experience.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work s0107V1962 can be recognized by its format more than a meter wide, its S-shaped road, the two asymmetrical tree masses and the yellow sky.

The double square format

Van Gogh uses a canvas of approximately 50 × 100 cm, two juxtaposed squares. This width allows the fields to breathe while maintaining the road as an axis of depth.

An asymmetrical plant frame

The round tree on the left rises from the ground; the branches on the right descend from the top. Their opposition opens an irregular window onto the village and the sky.

Light in the directions

The brushstrokes of the sky, the fields and the path change angle. The landscape thus seems crossed by currents rather than divided into immobile flat areas.
