Paysage avec trois arbres et des maisons, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
Landscape with three trees and housesReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Three trees with winding trunks stand in front of low houses and a lilac sky. The branches intertwine like calligraphy while the brown and green furrows of the land lead the eye to the right.
Look at the work
Three gnarled trees in front of the houses of Auvers
The trunks start from a light embankment, slightly offset to the right. Their branches divide into dark, nervous lines, surrounded by small yellow and green leaves. A white mass on the left evokes a flowering tree or shrub.
In the background, several houses with orange-red roofs close the view. The foreground alternates strips of brown earth, green grass and almost black furrows. The gray purple sky, crossed by curves, amplifies the movement of the branches.
The three trees connect the streaks of the ground to the swirls of the sky and give the landscape its vertical tension.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The F815 work can be recognized by its three aligned trees, the houses placed on both edges and the brown terrain covered with long oblique touches.
Three irregular verticals
The trunks are neither straight nor symmetrical. Their different curves avoid a mechanical rhythm and give each one its own presence.
An earth painted diagonally
The brown and green furrows rise to the right. They slide the gaze under the trees and connect the two groups of houses.
The sky extends the branches
Lilac and gray lines describe loops around the peaks. The limit between vegetation and atmosphere becomes deliberately mobile.
