The trees interrupt the view and make the sea more distant

The foreground is almost entirely occupied by free vegetation, covered with greens, ochres and reds. The thin trunks form a series of vertical screens whose intervals reveal the blue of the English Channel.

Beyond the brush, the clear coast draws a discontinuous line under a vast blue sky. Monet avoids the clear panorama: the landscape is revealed in fragments, as during a walk along the edge of the cliff.

The sea is not the isolated subject of the painting; it becomes a luminous apparition between trees which impose their rhythm on the gaze.
