Look at the work

Valley opens between water, village and sky

The light surface of the water enters from the left edge and sinks towards the village. On the right, a bank covered with grasses and flowers advances diagonally; two dark trees form a vertical counterweight. These nearby masses give full breadth to the valley.

The Vétheuil bell tower stands in the center of a strip of houses almost confused with vegetation. The hillsides are divided into paths and oblique plots, then the gaze rises towards a very active sky where white clouds are built in colored layers.

Monet does not place Vétheuil as a simple motif in the center: the village becomes the meeting point of water, cultivated slopes and the movement of the sky.

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay documents a painting exhibited in 1879 and bequeathed to the State by the collector Étienne Moreau-Nélaton.

The painting appears in the catalog of the exhibition organized on Avenue de l'Opéra, under number 41, the same year of its creation.

Legacy Étienne Moreau-Nélaton

The work entered the national collections in 1927, passed through the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume, then joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
