Vincent van Gogh · May -July 1887 · Paris, near Asnières

Along the Seine, F299Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A row of trees accompanies the Seine under a sky covered with blue diagonals; the dark walker, the long shadows and the pencil lines still visible give this canvas left unfinished an immediate freshness.

Look at the work

A bright waterfront promenade

The clear bank starts from the foreground and runs along the river to the left. The regularly spaced trunks measure the depth, while a solitary figure advances under their foliage.

The sky and water are covered with rapid blue lines. On the horizon, some straight lines still belong to the preparatory pencil drawing, which Van Gogh did not completely cover.

In Paris, Van Gogh takes easels and equipment in search of patterns. He first sketches this view directly on the canvas, then paints it in part; he may be considering finishing it in the workshop, but never will.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this unfinished canvas of 49.4 × 65.3 cm under s0055V1962; it corresponds to references F299/JH1254.

01

Trees as a measure of space

The trunks gradually decrease and move towards the bottom. Their succession transforms the bank into a deep promenade.

02

Preserved pencil lines

Above the blue of the river, the preparatory drawing remains perceptible. These lines directly show a stage of Van Gogh's work.

03

An unfinished but coherent state

Some areas are barely covered, yet the alternation of sand, water, trees and sky is enough to balance the composition.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice emphasizes the material transported by Van Gogh, the underlying pencil sketch and the unfinished nature of the work.

Method

Draw directly on the canvas

Before color, Van Gogh draws the broad outlines of the river and the horizon in pencil, without completely erasing this construction.

Status

A painting that remained unfinished

Parts of the support remain poorly covered. The museum assumes that the artist was perhaps thinking of taking the painting back to his studio.

Location

The banks of the Seine near Asnières

Van Gogh found banks, parks and bridges beyond Paris where he experimented with a clear palette and a more divided touch.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the lightness of the lightly covered areas, the pencil lines of the horizon and the blue shadows of the trees, without giving the canvas an artificially finished appearance.

  • The row of trees deep
  • The dark walker
  • The blue shadows on the bank
  • Pencil lines on the horizon
  • The rapid diagonals of the sky
