An island covered in purple and green trees barely stands out from a pinkish blue sky. Its rounded silhouette stretches to the right, then repeats itself in the Seine with a lighter and more scattered reflection. Monet captures a foggy morning near Vernon, when the shapes remain legible while dissolving in the same cold light.
Look at the work
The plant mass is not exactly in the center: it slides to the right and leaves a large opening of sky and water to the left. A small, low tree marks the end of the island, while the main summit rises in touches of purple, white and green.
The reflection occupies an area almost as large as trees. Vertical markings gradually fragment into blue, purple, pink and light green. At the very bottom, the water becomes paler and lets the red-brown signature play the role of a final accent.
The free space on the left gives air to the island, while its stretched reflection anchors it in the silent depth of the Seine.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Metropolitan Museum indicates that Monet painted four versions of this composition. They share the frontal island and the misty atmosphere, but differ in the shape of the trees, the light and the place of the reflection.
The island mainly occupies the right two-thirds. The opening on the left reveals a thin distant line and prevents the plant mass from completely closing the landscape.
Blue, purple, green and pink-gray overlap without hard outline. White touches in foliage suggest moisture and light rather than separate leaves.
Reference image
The only reference image comes from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and measures 1,905 × 1,518 px. It has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.
The vegetation rises in stages from the small left tree to the right summit. This climb gives movement to a scene where the water remains almost still.
The lower part takes up the silhouette, but it lengthens and breaks it down. Clear intervals between keys are essential to maintaining water transparency.
Sky, foliage and Seine separate by small temperature differences. Faithful reproduction should avoid reinforcing the edges or adding too clear a horizon.
Documented benchmarks
This information concerns Near Vernon, Nettle Island of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inventory 60.154 and Wildenstein 1491.
This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 73.3 × 92.7 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 97" lower left.
Nettle Island was near Monet's property. The painter moored his boats there and observed the effects of mist and light on this calm part of the river.
The painting joined the Metropolitan Museum of Art through a donation from the McVeigh couple in 1960. It bears the inventory number 60.154.
