À propos de l’œuvre

Verre aux œillets, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Eyelet glassReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A bouquet of white, blue and dark red carnations fits in a simple green glass. With a few nerve rods, a light yellow background and the bluish shadow of the table, Van Gogh constructs a light, almost transparent still life.

Look at the work

Clear eyelets in transparent green glass

The flowers are divided into two asymmetrical groups. On the left, the blue and white corollas tighten around several stems which rise to the upper edge. On the right, two red-purple carnations jut out in front of a small cloud of pale flowers.

The cylindrical glass is indicated by blue-black contours and green passages which reveal the submerged rods. On the table, a blue-gray shadow goes to the left. The yellow background remains almost empty and makes the contours particularly visible.

The transparency of the container and the voids between the flowers give the bouquet a fragility very different from the large floral vases of Auvers.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F598 work can be recognized by its small green glass, its off-center bouquet, the long bare stems and the almost monochrome yellow background.

01

A transparent container

The glass is not painted as an opaque volume. The stems, green reflections and a few dark blue lines are enough to suggest the walls.

02

A bouquet deliberately opened

Corollas do not form a continuous mass. The yellow spaces between them and the long stems give an airy rhythm to the composition.

03

Contours and flat areas

The Van Gogh Museum brings this still life closer to the artist's taste for Japanese prints: simple colored plans, visible outlines and quick execution.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Glass with Carnations is an oil on canvas painted in Auvers in June 1890. Preserved in a private collection, it is cataloged F598 and JH2043.

Context

Among a dozen bouquets from Auvers

Van Gogh mainly painted landscapes during his stay, but also created a varied series of floral still lifes, often for his pleasure or as a gift.

Format

A canvas of 41 × 32 cm

The small size matches the economy of the pattern: a glass, a few flowers, a light table and almost no accessories.

Catalog

F598 · JH2043

These references distinguish the carnation glass of the F280 wildflower vase and the large bouquets kept in museums.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must keep the lightness of the voids, the irregular contours of the eyelets and the transparency of the glass, without artificially thickening this little bouquet.

  • The discrepancy between the blue-white group and the two dark carnations
  • The long green stems left almost bare
  • The rods visible through the cylindrical glass
  • The gray blue shadow placed on the light yellow table
