From a balcony of the Colonnade du Louvre, Monet looks out over the Jardin de l'Infante, the quays and the left bank of Paris. A geometric lawn occupies the foreground; behind its balustrade, pedestrian and car traffic forms an animated black ribbon. The trees in the garden then open onto a vast panorama where the Pantheon, the Sorbonne and Saint-Étienne-du-Mont emerge under a moving sky.

Look at the work

The orderly garden, modern traffic and historical monuments overlap in depth

The bird's eye view first reveals an intense green rectangular lawn, lined with clear paths and small flower beds. A curved balustrade crosses the lower middle; beyond, crowds, cabs and horses line up along the quay.

Dense trees hide part of the Seine, then the roofs of the left bank rise towards the horizon. The dome of the Pantheon occupies the center, Saint-Étienne-du-Mont appears on the left and the Sorbonne on the right. White and gray clouds fill the upper half of this vertical format.

Monet does not choose between monument and modern life: he makes the geometry of the garden, the movement of the quay and the historical panorama of Paris coexist.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A depth organized by bands

Lawn, balustrade, traffic, trees, Seine, facades and sky clearly follow one another. The vertical format allows these plans to be stacked while maintaining the Pantheon as a distant landmark.

The crowd as an urban texture

Passers-by are not individualized. Their silhouettes and those of the vehicles form a dense frieze which opposes its agitation to the calm surfaces of the garden and the sky.

An official view that has become a contemporary landscape

In the spring of 1867, Monet obtained authorization to paint from the Louvre. He turns his back on the palace collections to represent the present city, its public spaces and its circulation.

The visual corresponds to the Allen Memorial Art Museum's 1948.296 inventory and Wildenstein number 85. Its native definition of 1008 × 1512 px has been preserved in WebP without oversampling.

The lawn maintains a clear geometry

Its edges and paths provide the main perspective marker in the foreground. Small, colorful plantings should, however, prevent this area from becoming a uniform flat area.

Color02

The Pantheon remains distant

Its dome is recognizable but treated in grays close to the sky. Artificially reinforcing it would bring it closer and break the staggering of Parisian neighborhoods.

Matter03

The sky combines clear reserves and thick touches

Clouds change from white to bluish gray without a closed outline. Their large scale balances the tighter precision of the city and the garden.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measures 91.8 × 61.9 cm. It is kept at the Allen Memorial Art Museum under the 1948.296 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 85.

An oriental balcony of the Louvre Colonnade

Monet obtains official authorization to install his easel there. From a neighboring location, he also painted Quai du Louvre W83 and Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois W84.

From the garden to the Pantheon

The foreground is the former Infanta Garden, located near the palace. On the horizon, the artist lines up several monuments on the left bank and transforms Paris into a panoramic landscape.

Provenance03

A painting particularly esteemed by Monet

The pianist Charles Wilfrid de Bériot bought it around 1873. In a later correspondence, he recalls that Monet then attributed to it a value twice that of his other works. The museum acquired it in 1948.
