The cut house acts as a foil
The dark wall on the far left places the viewer at the very edge of the village. It concentrates the densest colors and makes the central snow more vibrant without the need for pure white.

Claude Monet · Lavacourt · winter 1879 · W514
A snowy path follows the Seine at Lavacourt. The tight houses and bare trunks line the left; three small figures advance towards the bend of the bank, while the river and the opposite hillside disappear in a blue-gray mist. Monet does not paint uniformly white snow: pinks, mauves, blues, greens and browns reveal the earth, walls and cold light. This 50.6 × 66 cm oil on canvas, painted in early 1879, corresponds to Wildenstein 514.

Look at the work
The edges of the houses are strongly cut by the frame and create a dark vertical. From this mass, the path opens diagonally towards walkers, then narrows in the distance. The Seine accompanies this movement to the right, almost without a clear limit with the misty hillside.
The fresh snow reveals numerous passages of ground. The white touches intertwine with salmon roses, muted greens and blues. The trees receive transparent mauves and browns; their branches blend into a sky worked by broad, clear gestures, as if humidity were absorbing the contours.
Christie's notice describes a painted view downstream from Lavacourt during the very cold winter of early 1879. It highlights the silver, pink and blue range by which Monet transforms harsh conditions into a surprisingly bright atmosphere.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The dark wall on the far left places the viewer at the very edge of the village. It concentrates the densest colors and makes the central snow more vibrant without the need for pure white.
A nearby character and two silhouettes further away punctuate the diagonal of the path. Their small scale measures the distance and extent of the winter landscape.
The blue hillside becomes almost transparent to the right. Monet reduces contrast and accuracy instead of just lightening the color, creating continuous atmospheric depth.
Reference image
The single image represents exactly Wildenstein 514. The best reliable file available measures 2,200 × 1,673 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.
It must start largely from the bottom and narrow near distant figures. This trajectory connects houses, walkers and the Seine in a single composition.
Roses, greens, blues and browns remain visible between the light impastos. A uniform white cover would remove the material richness of the foreground.
The hillside and air share similar values, but a few horizontal blues hold the bank. Too much contrast would destroy the effect of humid cold; too little would make the structure of the river disappear.
Documented benchmarks
The sales instructions and the catalog raisonné document Lavacourt, l'hiver, oil on canvas from 1879, 50.6 × 66 cm and reference Wildenstein 514.
Established in the region since September 1878, Monet faced lasting cold at the beginning of 1879. He painted snow, frost and fog along both banks of the Seine.
The houses occupy the left bank of the painting and the river opens to the right. This orientation distinguishes W514 from other snow landscapes centered on Vétheuil or on the debacles of the Seine.
The painting belonged very early to the painter Paul Vayson de Pradenne, then notably passed through Boussod, Valadon & Cie and Cyrus J. Lawrence. She has appeared in several exhibitions devoted to the winter landscapes of impressionism.

Presentation in your interior
This winter landscape is suitable for a quiet bedroom, office or living room. A pearl gray, powder pink or mist blue wall and a weathered wooden frame extend its cold light while letting the warm accents of the path live.
