The plumages give shape to a composition without decoration

The two pheasants occupy the center and the foreground. Their massive bodies cross slightly, their long tails run towards the edges and their dark heads rest on the tablecloth. Around them, gray and white plovers create shorter and lighter volumes.

The tablecloth descends towards the viewer in large pale blue and ivory folds. The gray background, covered with discreet variations, removes any anecdote. This sobriety forces the eye to follow the differences in texture: fine feathers, glossy wings, beaks, legs and crumpled fabric.

Here, light does not describe a landscape: it reveals the weight of birds, the direction of feathers and the folds of the tablecloth.
