Under a vault of purple and white lilacs, three figures rest almost entirely absorbed by the shadow of the garden. The gray sky diffuses a cold light on the flowers, while the grass in the foreground remains a deep green. Monet paints less of a group portrait than an atmospheric contrast between the light flowering and the dark shelter formed by the branches.

Look at the work

The luminous flowering forms a roof above the almost hidden figures

The clusters of lilacs occupy the entire upper half and are distributed in pale pink, purple, white and green masses. Their branches start from a trunk inclined to the left then extend to the right edge. A few gaps in gray sky prevent this canopy from becoming compact.

In the shadows, a woman in a blue-gray dress sits in the center; two other people can be seen left and right. Their faces and clothes receive very few accents. This discretion transforms the group into an integral part of the foliage rather than a separate subject.

Under the overcast sky, the flowers do not shine in direct sunlight: they emerge from the shadows thanks to the subtle gaps of pink, gray, green and white.

The leaning trunk acts as a pillar, while the branches form an arc above the group. The grass closes the base of this refuge and keeps the figures in a dark depth.

Lilacs built in clusters rather than flower by flower

The light touches come together in different densities. Some areas are almost white, others pink gray or purple, which suggests the volume of flowering and its remoteness.

Gray weather that reduces sharp shadows

Light comes from all over the sky and not from a single direction. The transitions therefore remain flexible between flowers, leaves and grass, while the space under the tree retains the deepest values.

Composition01

The canopy must retain its voids and transparencies

Passages of sky and dark foliage remain visible between the flowers. Filling them with mauve or white would transform the tree into a uniform decorative mass.

Color02

Figures should not come out of the shadows too much

Their low contrast is part of the desired effect. A few touches for the faces, headdresses and dress are enough to make them present.

Matter03

Greens go from brown to turquoise

Leaves, shade and grass do not use the same tone. These subtle gaps separate the soil, branches and bottom without drawn contours.

Painted between 1872 and 1873, this oil on canvas measures 50.2 × 65.2 cm. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the RF 1680 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 203.

Monet's garden in Argenteuil

The museum notice places the scene in Val-d'Oise. Monet observes the domestic garden here as a laboratory of light, season and color, several decades before Giverny.

Title02

A work also called Rest Under the Lilacs

The alternate title emphasizes people sitting under the branches. The main title instead favors the plant and the weather condition, two elements which effectively dominate the composition.

Collection03

The Étienne Moreau-Nélaton donation of 1906

Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in February 1873. Étienne Moreau-Nélaton then acquired it from the merchant and gave it to the State with his collection; the work joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
