A long pink and white gap crosses the pool between green, turquoise and purple reflections. The water lilies are arranged in irregular bands which bring the eye to the surface, while the reflected willows descend into the water. This vertical version shows neither bank nor horizon: all space is born from light and paint.
Look at the work
The painting is organized around a current of light which starts from the top, widens in the center then almost reaches the lower edge. The floating leaves form several horizontal thresholds. On the right, a dark mass of reflections gives weight to the composition and accentuates the pink clarity.
Water green and turquoise dominate the deep areas, but blues, purples and pinks circulate throughout the surface. The flowers receive thicker and more vivid touches. Monet thus makes the flatness of the leaves coexist and the impression of almost bottomless depth.
In W1708, gray weather does not reduce color: it transforms the pool into a space of deep greens crossed by pink light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Christie's links this painting to the group of fifteen vertical water lilies painted that year. The format of 100.2 × 73.2 cm allows the reflections to descend for a long time, while making strips of leaves decisive interruptions.
The sales instructions describe a late light effect. Monet does not paint the sky directly: his clarity appears in the water in the form of a pale passage, surrounded by the colder and denser hues of reflected trees.
The flowers are laid in brief impasto, the leaves in side lines and the reflections in more fluid vertical marks. These different gestures prevent the surface from becoming decorative and give each area its own depth.
Reference image
Only one reference image is used. Christie's photography was cropped to the edge of the canvas and then preserved in 1790 × 2445 px and converted into a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The clear gap is not rigidly centered: it winds slightly to the left and then returns to the foreground. The dark masses on the right balance this movement.
Greens structure the whole, while pink opens the light. Magenta flowers serve as punctuations and purples give density to reflections without reducing them to black.
Reproduction must alternate charged paint on the water lilies and more flexible passages in the water. The central light retains traces of color and should never become a uniform white.
Documented benchmarks
Christie's documents this version under the title Water Lilies, Gray Time and Wildenstein Number 1708.
This oil on canvas measures 100.2 × 73.2 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 1907" at the bottom right and was painted in Giverny.
The painting appears under number 31 in the exhibition Les Nymphéas, series of water landscapes by Claude Monet, opened in Paris in May 1909. This presentation of forty-eight water landscapes marks public recognition of the cycle.
Bernheim-Jeune acquired the work directly from Monet in 1923. It then passed through Henri Canonne, Acquavella Galleries and the Onassis family before its sale at Christie's in 2022.
