The reflection of a willow descends in long purple and green streaks over a blue-gray pool. Water lilies group together mainly on the right, where a few red flowers give a scale to the surface. Two meters wide, Monet paints less of a place than a continuous movement between water, vegetation and light.

The willow dissolves in water while the water lilies retain the surface

The left half remains wide open. Vertical touches of lilac, olive green and gray blue suggest reflected branches, without trunk or visible bank. This almost empty area, however, contains numerous spikes which vary the depth of the water.

On the right, the blue and green leaves overlap in denser groups. Some orange-red flowers appear as small, sharp accents. The horizontal touches surrounding them interrupt vertical reflections and restore the surface of the pool.

The picture oscillates between depth and surface: the willow seems to descend into the water, then the water lilies bring the gaze back to the canvas itself.

The gray-purple area should not be standardized. Its vertical variations, its green covers and its blue passages give the scale and breathing of the two-meter format.

Increasing density to the right

Water lilies accumulate gradually. Preserving this asymmetry is essential: regular distribution would eliminate lateral movement of the composition.

Two superimposed key directions

Willow reflections descend vertically; water and leaves build more horizontally. Their crossing makes the eye hesitate between mirror and painted material.

This oil on canvas measures approximately 130 × 200 cm and is dated around 1918, in the period 1916 -1919. Daniel Wildenstein's catalog raisonné records it under number 1860.

Old loan02

Issue L.2007.55 at the Metropolitan Museum

The work has been documented as loaned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number L.2007.55. Its status as a private collection distinguishes it from other versions of the same title kept in Marmottan, Chichu or Kitakyushu.

Late framing03

No sky, no shore, no horizon

Monet removes traditional landmarks from the landscape. The branches only exist through their reflection and the water lilies float without the edge of a pool, which gives the panel its immersive character.
