The Water Lily Basin, Boston W1630hand painted reproduction

The Japanese bridge appears almost absorbed in willows, reeds and reflections. In this version of Boston, the reds, blues and greens are particularly deep: the pool becomes a dense surface where the bridge arch still maintains an opening towards the garden.

Look at the work

A blue and purple arch holds together the foliage and the mirror of the pool

The bridge occupies the upper left part. Its blue-purple railing stands out against a mass of dark foliage, punctuated with reds and yellows. The light arch opens a passage in the center, but the hanging branches deliberately reduce visibility.

The lower half is constructed by horizontal red, blue, green and ocher bands. Water lily leaves float at different heights and prevent reflections from becoming a regular carpet. A few pink and white flowers catch the eye without forming a single center.

The bridge remains recognizable, but the colorful material of the pond and willows is already beginning to prevail over the description of the garden.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Water Lilies Basin, Boston W1630 - Claude Monet
01

A partially concealed bridge

The arch must remain legible between the branches and the reeds, without being redrawn. Its railing brings together several blues and purples rather than a single uniform color.

02

Verticals against horizontal water

Willows fall in long strokes; the basin extends into shorter, lateral bands. Their meeting gives depth to an almost square composition.

03

A dark but bright palette

Red browns, deep greens and blue blacks structure the shadow. Yellows, pinks and turquoise pass through them to prevent reproduction from becoming opaque.

Details and visual documents

The Japanese bridge behind the willowsThe detail brings the blues, purples and reds closer to the railing. The branches pass in front of the bridge and give the depth a layered construction.

Water lilies and colorful reflectionsThe blue-green leaves and pink flowers land on a horizontal network of reds, yellows and blues. The water remains noticeable without a smooth surface.

Moment of the series03

The bridge remains an architectural landmark

In this 1900 composition, Monet maintains the Japanese arch as his main structure. The reflections and foliage, however, spread across the entire surface, announcing the more immersive framing of the late water lilies.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the MFA Boston, 61.959 and W1630
  • The almost square format of 90.2 × 92.7 cm
  • Preserved bridge arch visible behind willows
  • The depth of reds, blues and greens without blocked areas
