Monet abolishes the shore and the horizon to fill the canvas with water, water lilies and reflections. The green discs gather mainly in the upper half, while white, pink and red flowers punctuate the surface. Below, the dark verticals of the willows mingle with the blue and purple sky: the pool becomes a deep space without traditional perspective.
Look at the work
The composition reads first as a vast horizontal expanse. The floating leaves form irregular archipelagos, separated by light blue and lavender passages. Monet varies their outline, inclination and density; some are summarized by a dark oval, others receive several layers of green, pink and brown.
The vertical reflections of the branches descend from the upper part and reappear at the bottom of the canvas. They are interrupted by flowers and by bursts of blue which suggest the sky. This superposition prevents us from immediately distinguishing what floats on the surface from what is reflected in the depth.
Depth no longer comes from a distant horizon: it is born from the meeting between the leaves placed on the water and the reflections which pass through it.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
No bank is visible and the view has no architectural landmark. Monet thus transforms a fragment of a garden into an autonomous visual field, where the top and bottom correspond less to the real landscape than to an organization of colors.
The lower right area concentrates almost black brown greens. It gives weight to the composition and brings out the light flowers. On the left, blues and mauves breathe more and maintain a bright opening.
Water lilies are constructed by visible gestures, sometimes placed on already dry passages. The contours should not be smoothed in reproduction: their hesitation and overlaps give the surface its vitality.
Reference image
The single reference photograph measures 3,744 × 3,180 px. It shows the actual canvas of the Portland Art Museum and has been encoded as a real WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
Water lilies accumulate at the top and right, then disperse downwards. This uneven distribution animates the large format and creates several areas of water where the reflections remain fully readable.
The cold palette of the pool is awakened by some bright pink, orange and red flowers. These accents are rare; their location and intensity must remain measured to maintain the original balance.
The leaves follow rather horizontal gestures, while the reflections descend vertically. The intersection of these two directions creates the sensation of a moving surface of water without resorting to drawn waves.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks concern precisely the Water Lilies of the Portland Art Museum, inventory 59.16 and Wildenstein number 1795.
This oil on canvas from 1914 -1915 measures approximately 160.7 × 180.7 cm. Acquired thanks to the Helen Thurston Ayer Fund, it has belonged to the Portland Art Museum since 1959.
The museum says the painting was not sold during Monet's lifetime. An old photograph shows the artist working in front of this painting, in the presence of Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, which directly links the preserved image to her late studio.
A recent treatment removed a synthetic varnish applied in 1959 and turned dark. The blues, pinks and greens have regained more clarity, as well as the differences in material between reflections, leaves and flowers.
