Claude Monet · circa 1906 · Ohara Museum of Art · W1689
The Giverny basin unfolds in a very light blue-green light. Small groups of yellow, white and pink leaves float at different distances, while the vertical reflections of the trees make one feel a depth without horizon. Preserved in Kurashiki, this version around 1906 is one of the emblems of the Ohara Museum of Art.

Look at the work
The composition is organized around a large open water space. Water lilies are concentrated in several islets: a pale group in the left foreground, two yellow groups in the center and a few pink flowers near the right edge. These gaps give rhythm to a deliberately bare surface.
In the upper part, the vertical touches suggest the reflected trees; lower down, the horizontal marks reaffirm the surface of the pond. Monet thus crosses two brush directions to simultaneously render the depth of the reflection and the thin skin of the water.
W1689 breathes through its voids: the flowers do not fill the pool, they measure its luminous extent.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The Ohara Museum of Art presents this painting in its journey of Western masterpieces. Its documentation dates it to around 1906 and gives the dimensions of 73 × 92.5 cm.
Founded in 1930, the Ohara Museum is Japan's first private museum devoted primarily to Western art. Monet's Water Lilies occupy a central place in this collection story.
Water lilies are rarer than in some neighboring versions. Clear water retains large open areas, making variations of blue, green and purple particularly important.
Reference image
Only one image is used: the complete view of W1689, preserved as a real WebP of 2,200 × 1,720 px, without artificial enlargement.
Flower groups do not form a regular frieze. Their size, density and height in the canvas must vary to preserve the impression of remoteness.
The light palette is based on very fine transitions. The yellows are concentrated around the leaves; roses remain rare and serve as points of attention.
The descending touches of the trees mingle with the flatter marks of the pool. This opposition builds space and must remain visible in the material of reproduction.
Documented benchmarks
The Ohara Museum of Art dates this version to around 1906 and gives it the dimensions of 73 × 92.5 cm; it corresponds to Wildenstein number 1689.
This almost panoramic oil on canvas measures 73 × 92.5 cm. It belongs to the countryside of water landscapes that Monet developed at the beginning of the 20th century in Giverny.
The painting is kept in the institution founded by the industrialist Magosaburo Ohara. The museum opened in 1930 to make a major collection of Western art accessible to Japan.
Monet observes a garden that he designed himself. However, the painting describes neither path nor bridge: it isolates water, flowers and reflections to create an autonomous landscape.
