Port-Goulphar, Belle-Île W1094hand painted reproduction

In Port-Goulphar, the green and purple sea is enclosed between two dark promontories before breaking against a group of rocks which blocks the top of the composition. No horizon stabilizes the view: the water, cliffs and cloudy sky fit together in a tense vertical format. Signed and dated Claude Monet 87, this oil on canvas measuring 81 × 65 cm is kept in a tense vertical format. Signed and dated Claude Monet 87, this oil on canvas measuring 81 × 65 cm is kept in the Art Gallery of New South Wales under number 8356 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1094.

Look at the work

A sea enclosed in the rocky gorge of Port-Goulphar

Two cliffs cut by the lower edges frame a narrow channel. At the bottom, massive rocks occupy the entire upper register and remove the horizon line. A clear opening between the masses only suggests the continuity of the sea.

The water is made of hundreds of touches of turquoise, blue, emerald green and white. The rocks bring together purple, brown, pink and green, with illuminated edges that change their volume. The purple and gray sky remains compact, almost as material as stone.

Deprived of a horizon, the navy becomes a surface under tension: the gaze is caught between the cliffs and must follow the shards of the water to find a way out.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A completely hidden horizon

The Art Gallery of New South Wales emphasizes this break with traditional navy. The rocks at the bottom replace the stabilizing line and bring all the masses closer to the viewer.

02

The sea as a real subject

The central channel appears small, but Monet fills it with a multitude of touches indicating waves, foam and reflections. The water thus concentrates the most intense movement of the canvas.

03

A close construction of Japanese prints

The cut framing, the superposition of the shots and the absence of horizon join visual solutions present in the Japanese prints that Monet knew and collected.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1094 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2,404 × 3,000 px, since reduced the Google Art Project file to 4,008 × 5,001 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the vertical format and the cut headlands

Side cliffs should enter from lower angles and tighten the sea. Artificially widening the view would cause the throat effect to be lost.

Color02

Preserve the purples and greens of the rock

The cliffs aren't just brown. These colors contrast cold and warm areas and render their volumes without academic drawing.

Matter03

Keeping the little white touches in the water

They indicate foam and wave breaks. Their dispersion must remain irregular so that the surface appears agitated, never decorative.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Art Gallery of New South Wales documents Port-Goulphar, Belle-Île, oil on canvas signed and dated 1887, 81 × 65 cm, inventory 8356 and Wildenstein catalog 1094.

Belle Island01

A campaign carried out on the wild Breton coast

Monet worked in Belle-Île in the fall of 1886 and painted the cliffs and seas of Port-Goulphar under changing conditions. This painting was completed or dated the following year.

Meeting02

Monet paints alongside Australian John Russell

The museum notice recalls the presence of expatriate painter John Russell in Belle-Île. This link gives particular resonance to the conservation of W1094 in an Australian public collection.

Collection03

Purchased by the Art Gallery in 1949

After belonging to the Durand-Ruel family then to several dealers and collectors, the work was acquired from the Rousso Gallery and entered Sydney under number 8356.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1094 version
  • The vertical format of 81 × 65 cm
  • The horizon entirely hidden by the rocks
  • The green and purple sea enclosed between two promontories

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical navy is suitable for an entrance, office or living room. A gray purple, deep green or light stone wall and a dark setting reinforce the power of the rocks and the vibration of the channel.
