The bare trees frame a tiny silhouette in the center of the path, then the perspective opens towards blue hills under a winter sky. Signed Claude Monet lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm, painted in 1886, is kept at the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-22 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1056.

A village street where snow transforms all colors

The edges of the path, facades and trunks converge towards a central point. A small figure is placed exactly in this depth, while the houses cut by the right edge bring the viewer closer to the street.

Snow is never white: it mixes pink, lilac, blue and ocher in the passage traces. The houses combine cream, pale green and brick red; the blue hills and the gray sky give the background a colder temperature.

The perspective seems classic, but Monet's touch dissolves each too rigid line: snow connects walls, road, trees and air in the same colorful vibration.

These colors give the relief of the road and the winter lighting. Uniform white snow would remove the impression of material.

Keep houses cut by the right edge

Their proximity creates an immediate entrance into the village and contrasts warm verticals with cold trees at the bottom.

Provenance03

Acquired from Monet by merchants in 1898

Galerie Georges Petit, Bernheim-Jeune and Isidore Montaignac bought the work from the artist in 1898. She then went through Durand-Ruel, Paul Cassirer and several collections before joining the Hasso Plattner collection.
