A row of lime trees with red, yellow and green foliage unfolds in front of the houses of old Poissy. Seen from a window of Villa Saint-Louis, the clear slope of the foreground descends towards the trees, while the facades and chimneys pile up under a blue-gray sky. Painted in the spring of 1882, this 80.7 × 65 cm vertical oil on canvas bears a signature stamp at the bottom right, belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 747.

Poissy observed through a row of lime trees

Three light trunks structure the lower half and cast long diagonal shadows on the ground. Their crowns come together in a thick and colorful mass which hides part of the houses, revealing windows, roofs and gables in fragments.

The lemon and olive greens of the foliage are crossed by vermilion reds, pinks and dark blues. Above, the facades alternate cream, gray and blue. The sky is painted by large rapid passages, giving the whole a changing late afternoon light.

Monet transforms an urban view into a plant screen: the houses are only discovered between the branches, while the shadows of the lime trees extend their rhythm into the foreground.

A view from the house

The height of the gaze and the immediately visible slope indicate an observation from Villa Saint-Louis. The composition plunges towards the Cours du 14-Juillet before going back towards the houses.

Trunks as vertical hinges

The three trees in the foreground connect the ground, the mass of foliage and the facades. Their irregular spacing avoids a rigid grid and gives a lively rhythm to the vertical format.

Shadows crossing the slope

The long blue-green and mauve bands in the foreground indicate the direction of the sun. They open the space diagonally and balance the more compact accumulation of houses in the upper part.

Keep houses partially hidden

Buildings do not form detailed architecture. They must appear in pieces between the branches so that the painting remains first a study of light and foliage.

The July 14 Course seen from Villa Saint-Louis

Monet lived in the villa with Alice Hoschedé and their children from December 1881 to April 1883. The window overlooks the lime trees of the promenade and the houses of old Poissy.

One of four known views of Poissy

The Christie's notice links W747 to a very small group: two scenes of fishermen on the Seine, a view of the Saint-Germain forest and this row of lime trees.

Provenance03

A work preserved in the artist's family

The painting remains in Monet's estate then with Jean-Pierre Hoschedé. It was presented for sale in New York in 2008 and remains today in a private collection.
