Look at the work

Two poplar curtains transform the evening sun into a depth of color

The first row, darker, occupies the entire width and forms an almost continuous vertical rhythm. Behind it, other trees appear in warmer light; no path or building creates a central point.

Blue, purple and green build the nearby trunks, while pink, gold and orange illuminate the air and leaves in the background. Dense touches make the foliage vibrate without isolating each tree.

The depth does not come from a perspective that leads far away, but from the colorful gap between two parallel rows: one already in shadow, the other still crossed by the sun.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A frieze composition

The main axes remain parallel to the plane of the canvas. The gaze moves from left to right in a living wall of trunks, sky and leaves rather than towards a single vanishing point.

02

Two simultaneous phases of light

Sotheby's describes nearby trees already gained by blues and purples, while the second row retains yellow flashes. This contrast creates depth and locates the time of day.

03

A pattern prior to the great series of 1891

Monet observed the poplars around Giverny from the 1880s. W1156 and its counterpart W1155 announced the systematic research that he would then devote to the trees of Epte.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1156 is used. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,366 px, reduced from the public source by 4,500 × 3,549 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the two separate rows

The first should remain darker and the second brighter. Melting them into a single wood would remove the essential structure of the painting.

Color02

Preserve the blues and purples of the trunks

These colors reflect twilight shadow without recourse to black. They must remain present even in areas of dense foliage.

Matter03

Keep the golden flakes punctual

The yellows do not cover the entire sky or all the trees. Their irregular distribution makes you feel the last breakthroughs of the sun between the leaves.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Sotheby's documents Les Peupliers à Giverny, oil on canvas of 74 × 92.7 cm painted around 1887 -1888, former MoMA collection and listed Wildenstein 1156.

Provenance01

From Durand-Ruel to major American collections

Acquired by Boussod, Valadon et Cie in 1892, the painting then went to Denys Cochin and Durand-Ruel before entering the Martin A. Ryerson collection in Chicago.

Museums02

Art Institute of Chicago then Museum of Modern Art

Ryerson bequeathed the work to Chicago in 1933. It was acquired in 1947 by Silberman, then donated to MoMA in 1951 before its sale at Sotheby's in 2015.

Reference03

The current numbering is Wildenstein 1156

Older editions of the catalog used number 1167. The sheet retains the corrected reference from the 1996 catalog raisonné.
