More than four meters wide, very pale water extends without a bank or horizon. The water lilies slide towards the edges, leaving in the center an area of yellow, green, pink and purple reflections whose depth remains deliberately uncertain. Monet gives no fixed reference: this monumental canvas is designed to envelop the field of vision.

Look at the work

An immense field of pale water, crossed by yellow, purple and pink, abolishes distance and horizon

The groups of leaves are mainly concentrated at the ends and in the lower part. The center remains more open, but it is never empty: green, ocher and light blue streaks circulate there. This distribution prevents the gaze from fixing and invites it to travel the entire width.

Reflections do not allow us to decide whether they come from the sky, clouds or willows located off-camera. Vertical gestures appear then dissolve in a more fluid material. The water thus becomes a luminous surface whose scale exceeds that of a traditional landscape.

The canvas does not represent a viewpoint over the pool: it places the viewer within an expanse of color with no perceptible edge.

Unlike several panels in the Orangerie, this composition offers neither bank nor identifiable trunk. The National Gallery emphasizes that distance and perspective are deliberately abolished.

A pale but very diverse palette

Green, ocher, purple, yellow, sky blue and pink overlap on the surface. Faithful reproduction must separate these tones without increasing their contrast to the point of losing diffuse brightness.

The leaves play a secondary role and open a large central interval. Their irregular position avoids symmetry and maintains the sensation of continuous water beyond the frame.

A space built in 1916 for the decorations

Monet had a workshop set up capable of accommodating these very large formats. Several panels evolve simultaneously while he prepares the monumental ensemble of Water Lilies.

Acquisition in 196303

From Monet's heirs to the National Gallery

The painting goes through Katia Granoff then the Galerie Beyeler. The National Gallery bought it in 1963 thanks to Grant-in-Aid and a special grant.
