The clear beach and turquoise sea occupy the foreground, while the cliff loses its contours in the atmosphere. Painted in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 60.7 × 73.7 cm is kept at the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo under the number NG.M.00368 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1044.

Look at the work

The rain brings the sea, the sky and the cliff together in the same light

The cliff extends from the left and ends with the large arch of the Downstream Gate. Behind it, the Needle appears as a paler shape. The beach line crosses the bottom of the painting without interrupting the general movement of the water.

Clear diagonals run across the sky and give a visible direction to the rain. Blues, greens and grays are mixed across the entire surface; a few mauve and pink accents prevent the sea fog from becoming monochrome.

Monet does not only paint a site in the rain: he paints the rain as a material that transforms the distance, the colors and even the solidity of the cliff.

The shoreline is not detailed; it serves as a threshold between the viewer and the sea, with very free touches of beige, gray and white.
