London, Parliament, reflections on the Thames W1606hand painted reproduction

The Victoria Tower and Parliament stand against the light under a pink, lilac and gray sky. On the Thames, a large gap of light reflects the setting sun while the side waters turn blue-purple. Monet transforms London architecture into a ghostly silhouette caught between mist and reflections.

Look at the work

Parliament as a blue shadow above a luminous Thames

The Victoria Tower forms the vertical axis, slightly offset to the right. The rest of Parliament stretches on either side in a cut mass but without detail. On the left, the shapes of Westminster fade almost entirely into the mist.

The light focuses on the water in an ivory and pink diagonal. The horizontal touches of the Thames interrupt the vertical reflection of the sky and the tower. This opposition between dark building and brilliant water gives the canvas its breadth.

W1606 does not describe London stone by stone: it makes Parliament a backlight and the Thames a huge sunset mirror.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A view from St. Thomas Hospital

During his second stay in London, Monet worked from a terrace of St. Thomas Hospital, on the opposite bank. This viewpoint brings together Parliament, Victoria Tower and the Thames in the same backlight.

02

An original signed and dated 1905

The Marmottan Monet museum keeps the painting under inventory 5007. It measures 81.5 × 92 cm and bears the signature and date "Claude Monet 1905" at the bottom right.

03

The legacy of Michel Monet

Remaining in the artist's family, the work joined the Marmottan museum in 1966 through the bequest of Michel Monet. It corresponds to number 1606 of the Wildenstein catalog.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the high definition reproduction of the 5007 inventory, converted into a real WebP of 2701 × 2362 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A vertical tower above an open reflection

The Victoria Tower should remain narrow and dark. Beneath it, the light from the water widens towards the foreground and prevents the composition from appearing too heavy.

Color02

Petrol blue, purple, pink and ivory

Cool colors build architecture and side waters. The pinks and ivories of the sky extend into the central reflection with warmer variations.

Matter03

Horizontal keys on the Thames

The river is animated by long, broken marks that cut off reflections. Reproduction must preserve their rhythm without transforming them into regular parallel lines.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet Museum documents this painting under inventory 5007; the catalog raisonné identifies it as Wildenstein 1606.

Identification01

Parliament of London, Wildenstein 1606

This oil on canvas from 1905 measures 81.5 × 92 cm. It is signed and dated lower right and belongs to the Thames View Series.

Collection02

Marmottan Monet Museum, inventory 5007

The painting entered the museum in 1966 with the bequest of Michel Monet, son of the artist. It thus joins the most important world collection of works by Claude Monet.

Architecture03

The palace rebuilt by Charles Barry

Parliament, rebuilt after the fire of 1834, adopted perpendicular Gothic. Monet removes almost all the details to retain a synthetic silhouette in the mist.
